Ordinary vs Extraordinary
by: Janet Mortinsen
Reading has always been one of my favorite pastimes. I have been a part of book clubs for years. When my childhood friends gather, we bring a list of “must reads.”
I was recently reading “Go As A River” by Shelley Read. It is a novel that takes place in Colorado based on true events. I was struck by one of the lines I read, “I’ve come to understand how the exceptional lurks beneath the ordinary.”
Wow – this line caused me to pause to think of all the ways I have experienced this. Certainly, as a mother observing my children achieve milestones that were “usual” brought such joy & excitement. Watching my children enjoy a flower, laugh at a dog playing chase or taste something delicious seemed exceptional due to their enthusiasm.
As a nurse, as patients recovered or struggled with issues, they voiced their desire to “feel like themselves” or return to work or do what they typically did in a day. They did not wish for exotic travel or fancy things; the ordinary felt extraordinary.
Looking at our faith, God used ordinary people to do exceptional work. Mary came from humble circumstances. David appeared to be no match for Goliath. The disciples were fishermen. And yet look at what they accomplished with faith and God’s help.
How blessed are we to experience the ordinary and even more blessed to recognize it as exceptional. May your faith allow you to find extraordinary in the everyday and accomplish what may seem unlikely.
