There is a kind of exhaustion that comes from carrying too much for too long.
We carry worries we cannot fix, and responsibilities that stretch us thin, and we carry grief, expectations, and quiet pressures no one else can see.
And somewhere along the way, we begin to believe that all of this is ours to hold. I love how this hymn specifically undermines that assumption and then directs us toward a more faithful approach.
It is a privilege to be able to let go of all these pressures and to instead place them into God's capable hands.
Prayer is not about finding the right words, rather it is about releasing the weight and telling the truth about the burdens we carry and then trusting that God will never be overwhelmed by it.
The hymn was written out of deep personal loss by Joseph Scriven, who knew what it meant to carry sorrow, but even in those circumstances, he still saw prayer as a gift.
Because in prayer, we are reminded: We are not alone.
Today's affirmation:
Faithful God,
I bring you what feels too heavy for me.
Hold what I cannot carry,
and let your peace make room for joy.
