The beloved hymn, "Eagle's Wings" (based on Psalm 91) describes God carrying us through the terrors of the night. The kind that wake us suddenly. The kind that whisper worst-case scenarios into the quiet. In the dark, everything feels closer, heavier, harder to shake.
And the hymn also speaks of God's presence with us during the swift and unexpected fears that come in the open, like an arrow in flight. Things we never saw coming. Things we cannot control once they are set in motion.
The lyrics of this hymn name both. It does not pretend fear belongs only to one time or place, rather it meets us in the full range of our vulnerability. But most importantly, the hymn speaks of shelter for us in all of these circumstances.
The hymn paints a powerful image: God as a refuge, wings stretched wide, covering us through whatever may come.
Today's affirmation:
Sheltering God,
cover me with your peace.
In the fears I can name and the ones I cannot,
remind me that I am always held in your care.
